LOWELL, Mass. — Recent UMass Lowell graduate, Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) has signed a professional contract with the New York Mets.

“I’m extremely thankful to have been given the opportunity by the Mets to extend my baseball career and live out my dream,” remarked Ryan. “I could not have done it without the help from my friends, family, teammates, and coaches. Most importantly, I would like to thank my parents for everything they have done for me over the years.”

Ryan ended his River Hawk career with a complete game in the program’s first America East Championship game, a 4-0 shutout of UAlbany, to pick up his 15th career victory. The right-handed pitcher leads all UMass Lowell Division I pitchers with wins, strikeouts (223), innings (292.1), ERA (3.23) and is tied atop the rankings with three complete games.

Andrew Ryan was a weekend starter for us for four years and he has been a part of some of the biggest wins in our short Division I history,” commented Head Coach Ken Harring. “His consistency year in and year out is what separated him from the rest. When Andrew took the mound, we knew we had an opportunity to win the game. We are extremely proud that the New York Mets have given him the opportunity to live his dream of playing professional baseball.”

The Rochester, Mass. native picked up five wins in his final season at UMass Lowell and finished the season second in the America East in both strikeouts and ERA, en route to earning All-Conference First Team honors for the second consecutive season. He graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Ryan joins former teammate, Ian Strom, in the Mets organization and is the third River Hawk in the past four years to sign a free agent contract following the draft.
