The Odds on Cleveland Cavaliers vs Golden State Warriors – is it really so one-sided?
The Cleveland Cavaliers seem to be following their role as underdogs in the 2018 NBA finals so far. At the time of writing, they have just come off a second defeat to favorites, Golden State Warriors. This is hardly surprising given that the Warriors were favored by 12 points over the Cavaliers prior to the first game. This is the largest points spread in a game of the finals since 1991.
This does not mean that if you are a die-hard Cavaliers fan, you should not back your team; it just means you should be realistic. You also need to choose a legitimate sportsbook. Here is a useful website where you can check out sportsbooks that are legitimately licensed and regulated for online betting. So, what should you know before placing your bet?
Regular season lead up not good for Cavaliers
If you look at the regular season, you can see why every expert, and every sportsbook, believes there is a huge gap between the Cavaliers and the Warriors. The plus 0.9-point differential of the Cavaliers is the worst for any team that has reached the finals since as far back as 1980-81 season. The gap of 5.0 between their per game differential and that of the Warriors is also huge.
Problems in the playoffs
The Cavaliers did not exactly cover themselves with glory in the playoffs either. Their rating of 1.2 points per 100 possessions was disturbingly low. Their adjusted playoff performance was one of the weakest ever. This is a very different story from the far more robust and successful performances that the Cavaliers put in, in 2016 and 2017. Given the playoff issues, and the woeful points differential of the Cavaliers in the regular season, it would seem as though the finals would be a walkover for the Warriors. The results of the first two games seem to bear this out.
Is a turnaround possible?
The fact is that the Warrior’s path to victory seems set, although the absence of Andre Iguodala could still be significant, given his past performances against James. There is no doubt that James has achieved far more success in the past when defended by Durant rather than Iguodala. If Iguodala remains on the sidelines, this could give the Cavaliers more of a chance. However, latest news reports suggest that he has returned to personal training and could be set for a return from the bone bruise injury that has caused him to miss out on the finals action so far.
It remains to be seen if Iguodala will return to action during the finals. Even if he stays on the sidelines, the Cavaliers still face an uphill struggle. They are simply not as good a team as they were last year. The smart money seems to be on the Warriors to do as everyone expects them to and surge on to finals victory. Only time will tell if the one-sided victory happens, or the Cavaliers cause any surprises.
