River Hawks Drop Non-Conference Final, 14-9, at Siena

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Despite battling back from a seven-run deficit, the UMass Lowell baseball team fell in its final non-conference contest of the season, 14-9, to Siena on Wednesday afternoon.

Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) led the River Hawks (22-26) with three RBI, and a trio of players recorded multiple hits. Both Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) and Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) drew a pair of walks, with the junior scoring a pair of runs as well.

The Saints (17-32) scored in each of the first three innings to open a 9-2 advantage, on seven hits and five walks.

Trailing by the same score in the fifth, UMass Lowell began a one-out rally with a Maiola walk and steal of second. Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) singled home Maiola, and two batters later Vinnie Martin (Lodi, N.J.) drew a bases-loaded walk to cut the deficit to 9-4. After a Siena pitching change Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) picked up a RBI on an infield single, and Maurice made it 9-7 with a double down the left field line to score Martin and Passatempo.

Ben Prada (Laurel, Md.) trimmed the gap to one-run with a sac fly, and in his second at-bat of the inning, Joey Castellanos(Nutley, N.J.) knotted the game with a single to right center.

Maurice and Passatempo recorded sacrifice flies in the second and third innings for UMass Lowell’s first two runs.

The Saints came right back in the bottom half and retook the lead, 10-9, on a double following an error. The hosts added insurance runs in the eighth to clinch the win.

The River Hawks close out the regular season with a home series against Stony Brook on March 18-19. First pitch on Friday is set for 12:30 p.m. following a special graduation ceremony for the seniors on the field.
