Eagles get six extra-base hits in win over Dartmouth

Suozzi and Goodreau record career-high three hits each

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team earned a 8-3 victory over Dartmouth on Wednesday at Harrington Athletics Village at Brighton Fields. Sophomores Jake Goodreau and Joe Suozzi, and senior Jake Palomaki, led the way at the plate for the Eagles (13-23) with three hits apiece, while Palomaki drove in a game-high three runs.

Junior left-hand reliever, Zach Stromberg collected the win, pitching 1.1 innings of relief. Classmate RHP John Witkowski earned his second save of the season, throwing a scoreless eighth and ninth while sophomore RHP Matt Gill struck out a career-high four in a 5.2-inning start. He allowed six hits, two runs and just one walk in a no-decision.

All three of Palomaki’s hits were for extra bases and he logged his team-leading 14^th multiple-RBI game.

BC HIGHLIGHTS

Sophomores Jake Goodreau and Joe Suozzi both logged a career-high three hits apiece, going 3-for-4 on the day. Goodreau knocked two doubles and scored two runs, and Suozzi had a double, RBI and two runs scored.
Senior Jake Palomaki drove in a game-high three runs and recorded three extra-base hits on two doubles and his third career triple. He scored twice and has reached base in 32 of the Eagles’ 36 games this season with a hit in 24 of them.
Sophomore RHP Matt Gill went 5.2 innings in his start, allowing six hits, two runs – both earned – with just one walk. He struck out a career-high four.
Freshman Chris Galland had one hit and one RBI. He has reached base in 11 straight games
Junior LHP, Zach Stromberg picked up his first win of the season – and first since 2016 – with 1.1 innings of relief work.
Junior RHP, John Witkowski collected his second save of the season, throwing the final two innings and allowing just two hits.
Sophomore Jack Cunningham has a hit and RBI in the last three games.
Sophomore Brian Dempsey was 1-for-3 with a run, RBI and sac bunt. He has reached base in 32 of the Eagles’ 36 games this season.

KEY PLAYS

Dartmouth tied the game in the seventh but the Eagles responded, scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead.
Witkowski kept the Big Green off the board with two scoreless innings of relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Eagles struck in their first at bat. Palomaki led off with a triple to left center and scored on a groundout by Galland.
BC added a run in the second as Goodreau led off with a double to right center and scored on an error by Dartmouth shortstop Blake Crossing.
With the third Big Green pitcher on the hill, the Eagles scored in the fifth. Suozzi knocked one to left and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. With two down, Palomaki doubled to right center to give BC a three-run lead.
The Big Green got on the board in the sixth. Sean Sullivan was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Matt Feinstein followed with a base hit. Gill forced a 463 double play to get two quick outs and Sullivan advanced to third. Crossing knocked one in the hole at short and beat Palomaki’s throw to first for Dartmouth’s first run of the game. After a single put runners on the corners, Stromberg came into the game. He walked the bases loaded and hit a batter to bring in a second run before getting a fly ball to end the inning.
Dartmouth tied the game in the seventh. Two walks and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third. Kyle Holbrook hit a sac fly to right to bring home the tying run. Dustin Shirley hit a single up the middle and Sullivan tried to score from second, but Palomaki threw him out at the plate to keep the game knotted at three.
The Eagles retook the lead in the seventh with LHP Max Hunter on the hill. Suozzi hit a one-out double to the left and Dempsey reached on an error. With new pitcher RHP Mike Concato on, Palomaki drove in both with a double to right center. A fly ball to center should have ended the inning on a double play as Palomaki was off the bag, but the Dartmouth shortstop dropped the throw, allowing the inning to continue. Cunningham singled to center to plate Palomaki to make it a 6-3 game.
BC added two more in the eighth and saw two more Dartmouth pitchers. Goodreau led off with single to center and sophomore Dante Baldelli drew a walk to put two on. Junior Jake Alu moved both runners into scoring position with a sac bunt and Suozzi scored Goodreau with a base hit to right. Dempsey followed with safety squeeze for the eighth run of the game.

The Eagles are 22-10 all-time against Dartmouth.
BC did not commit an error for the 17^th time this season.
The Eagles logged double-digit hits for the 18^th time in 2018 and the first since a 9-5 victory over Quinnipiac on April 11.
BC turned at least two double plays for the 9^th time in 2018.
Palomaki has recorded three-RBI games five times this season and multiple-RBI games 14 times, which leads the Eagles.
