ACC Baseball News & Notes

The second half of the ACC conference season got underway this past weekend. In the Atlantic, North Carolina State still has a one-game lead in the loss column on the Clemson Tigers. In the Coastal, we have a tie for the top spot between North Carolina and Duke who have matching records of 10-5.

The Player of the Week in the ACC is sophomore shortstop, Austin White, of Georgia Tech. He led the team in batting last week, going 8-for-15 for a .533 average. White hit one home run, a double, five rbi and three runs scored. He had a .800 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .562 as the Yellow Jackets picked up a series win over Florida State.

There are two pitchers of the week in the league. First is sophomore left-hander Connor Thomas. In the series win over the Seminoles, Thomas picked up the win by throwing a complete game last Saturday. He allowed just one run on six hits, walked a batter while striking out nine Florida State hitters. Thomas threw a career-high 116 pitches in the win and held the Seminoles to a .194 batting average. The outing was the longest of his career, and the complete game was just the second thrown by a Georgia Tech started since 2013.

The other Pitcher of the Week in the ACC is senior Derek Casey of Virginia. He faced just 30 batters in a complete game shutout of Virginia Tech last Friday. He gave up only three hits, did not walk anyone, and fanned seven. Casey now has 70 strikeouts on the season, which places him second in the conference. The quality start was his fourth of the year, and second in league play.

The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its monthly awarded winners for the month of March. The winner is Clemson’s Seth Beer as he hit .294 (20-for-68), with eight home runs, 20 rbi, and a .662 slugging percentage. This is the second straight month that the ACC has had a player recognized as National Player of the Month.

The region of New England is known for a long winter, and short spring and summer. It has not stopped Wake Forest from plucking kids out of the area. Half of the twelve recruits for 2018 class are from New England. Three are from Massachusetts, two are from New Hampshire, and one from Maine.

Sophomore Logan Wyatt, of the Louisville Cardinal, is having a fine year at the plate. He leads the ACC in doubles with 14, an on-base percentage of .493 and in walks with 33. He is seventh in the batting race, with a .342 average in 33 games.
