NBA Swing: Washington Wizards

After coming off of an NBA playoff deficit last year to the Boston Celtics, the Washington Wizards were out to redeem themselves this year.

They have had a pretty good season overall so far, but we have seen some inconsistency. Their record is 40-30, a .571 winning percentage, and they sit in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Their inconsistency lies in their defensive coordination and their frequent inability to finish games when they have the lead.

In their recent game against the Indiana Pacers, the Wizards looked good. They had some very good drives to the basket and they were able to maintain a big lead for the majority of the game. Washington ended up winning that game by a score of 109-102. They also pulled off the victory in a nail-biter against the Celtics last week, winning by one point in overtime, 125-124.

The Wizards have shown that they are able to compete with the strongest teams in the league, but when something goes wrong they completely fall apart. Bradley Beal and John Wall have both made positive contributions to this Wizards team on the offensive end. Beal leads the team in points per game, averaging 23.3 while Wall leads the team in both assists and blocks, as his averages are 9.3 assists per game and 1.1 blocks per game.

Defensively, the Wizards have relied on center Marcin Gortat, who averages 7.6 rebounds per game. Otto Porter Jr. is another player that has been a powerhouse for this Washington franchise, as he averages 14.8 points per game and 1.6 steals.

In terms of their playoff chances this year, it seems very possible that this group of men can make a serious run.

With their current position in the conference standings, there is still plenty of time for them to make their way up to the top and qualify for the playoffs in the summer. With that being said, however, in some games we have seen this year in which the Wizards did not play to the best of their ability, they did not look like a playoff team. If they continue to play games that way, they will certainly not make the playoffs, as teams like the 76ers and the Heat are right on their tails. They must focus on their defense and improving their strategies on that end of the court because they have given up so many points to other teams this year. If they can put that together with the offense that they have created, then they can easily be a threat in the postseason.

Be sure to tune in to the next Washington Wizards game this Friday, March 23, where they will face the Denver Nuggets on their home turf. You will not want to miss what should definitely be a great game.
