BC BASEBALL Logs First ACC Win in 11-3 Victory over No. 22 NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Boston College baseball team tallied its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory with an 11-3 victory over No. 22 NC State in final game of the three-game series on Saturday evening at Doak Field at Dail Park in Raleigh, N.C.Senior RHP Brian Rapp threw seven shutout innings, allowing just two singles – including just one that left the infield – while striking out eight. Redshirt junior Scott Braren tied his career high with three hits while sophomore Jack Cunningham drove in a career-high three runs on the evening.

The 11 runs tied a season high and the Eagles recorded double-digit hits for the fourth time in five games.

BC returns to The Heights to open the new ballpark on the Brighton campus on Tuesday, March 13 with a 3 p.m. game against Holy Cross.

BC HIGHLIGHTS

  • Senior RHP Brian Rapp threw seven shutout innings, allowing just two base hits, including a lead-off infield single. He struck out eight in his second win of the season.
  • Redshirt junior Scott Braren tied a career high for hits with a 3-for-5 outing. He drove in two and scored a run.
  • Sophomore Jack Cunningham drove in a career-high three runs on a 1-for-4 day.
  • Senior Jake Palomaki extended his hit streak to eight games – the longest of the season for the Eagles – going 2-for-5 with two runs, a walk, a stolen base and a double. In the three games series with State, he led the Eagles with a 5-for-11 showing with four runs and two doubles.
  • Freshman Chris Galland knocked an RBI triple for the second consecutive game on a 2-for-3 night with two runs.
  • Junior Gian Martellini recorded four RBIs in the doubleheader on Saturday.

  • The Eagles used a seven-run third to propel the offense while Rapp threw seven shutout innings to keep the Pack at bay.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Eagles scored two in the first to take an early lead. Palomaki and sophomore Dante Baldelli led off with back-to-back base hits and Martellini and Braren followed with groundout RBIs to go up, 2-0.
  • BC put together a seven-run third to take a 9-0 lead. With one down, Palomaki doubled and the Eagles loaded the bases on a walk and hit by pitch. Braren plated Palomaki with a single through the right side. Sophomore Jacob Yish drew a walk to bring in another BC run before junior Jake Alu doubled to the corner in right to score two more. Yish scored when right fielder Brock Deatherage’s throw was wild and Alu came home on Galland’s triple. Before the inning was over, Cunningham chopped one to second and J.T. Jerrett threw home but Galland beat the throw, scoring the seventh run of the inning.
  • Cunningham drove in two in the fifth to give the Eagles an 11- 0 lead. With one out, Alu singled, Galland walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Cunningham doubled to left to clear the bases.
  • NC State scored three off junior RHP Thomas Lane in the final two frames. In the eighth, Brett Kinneman hit a two-out, solo shot over the right-field wall. With one on after a fielding error in the ninth, Brad Debo hit a home run to make it an 11-3 game.

  • BC scored 11 runs for the third time, tying a season high.
