ACC News and Notes

The month of February is here and we are a month away from the New York Life ACC Tournament at the Barclays arena in New York. It’s time for teams to really push for the best seedings possible heading into the conference tournament. Here is how things are stacking up.

The Virginia Cavaliers sits atop the league standings with a three-game cushion over second place Clemson. Their unblemished record of 11-0, is the first time since 1981 they have been at that mark. With an overall record of 22-1, Virginia is looking just like a number 1 seed when the field of 68 is announced.

Those Tigers we mentioned are having a terrific season. They were picked to finish 13th in the pre-season media poll before the season got underway. Clemson finds themselves at 8-3 in second place. The last time the Tigers were at 8-3 was back in 1996-97. Their win on the road last Saturday at Wake Forest inched them ahead of Duke into the second position. All this is being done with their best player now on the sidelines in Donate Grantham, who is lost for the rest of the year due to a torn ACL.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets may be an under .500 team both in overall and league records, but they do have two players that are reaching milestones. Senior Ben Lammers recorded his fifth conference double-double in Sunday overtime loss at Boston College and his ninth overall this year. In his four-year career at Georgia Tech, Lammers has 25 career double-doubles. He is also the ACC statistical leader in blocked shots with 236, has nine 10-rebound games this season, and 26 for his career. He is also closing in on 1,000 points at Georgia Tech.

Lammers teammates Senior Tadric Jackson has recently gone over the 1,000 point plateau in a win at home vs Syracuse last Wednesday night. He becomes the 44th player in Yellow Jackets history to score 1,000 in his career. He dropped 15 on the Orange in that game, reaching the milestone on his final basket of the game. Congratulations!.

When we talk about Boston College, its usually about the big three of Jerome Robinson, Ky Bowman or Jordan Chatman. Maybe another name should start to get some mention. Freshman forward Steffon Mitchell is starting to get noticed around the league, and for good reason. He is the only player in the ACC and one of three nationally to average 7.0 PPG, 7.9 boards, 1.7 assists, 1.1 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game. His assist to turnover ratio is 15:1. He has registered 10+ rebounds in a game seven times and has three double-doubles to his credit. Mitchell could become only the sixth freshman since 1972-73 to lead BC in rebounds/game.

Senior Grayson Allen of Duke is putting up some numbers as well. He is first in statistical leaders in points scored with 1,757. In his final go-around with the Blue Devils, Allen has put together one thirty point game this year, For his career, Allen has 36 twenty point games which rank him first. He finds himself sixth in assists with 361.
