BC knows that games are starting to become a precious few. If they want to keep playing games in March, then Sunday afternoon’s game against Georgia Tech was a must one to have.  The Eagles pulled it out with some clutch shooting down the stench from Ky Bowman who finished with 17 points. A big three from Steffon Mitchell with 35 seconds left in the second half, tied the game and helped send it to overtime. The Eagles won 80-72 and improved to 14-9 and 4-6 in conference play.

After the game, Georgia Tech head coach Josh Pastner credited the Eagles with “making big shots”. He was also hard on his team for the 13 turnovers they created saying 13 is too many. He said, “its been our Achilles heel all season long”.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets did not have a problem in that area, or for that matter any part of their game. They would hold the advantage for most of the first half, building their biggest lead to 13 with 5:03 left in the first twenty minutes. The only time Boston College was in front was on their first possession of the game when Jerome Robinson nailed a three to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead 58 seconds in. Robinson had 19 points before fouling out with 3:20 left in second half.

After Robinson make from behind the arc, the Yellow Jackets went to work. A 6-0 run got them the lead at 9-3. An 8-2 spurt pushed the advantage to 17-8 halfway through the first half. Abdoulaye Gueye (11 points), and Josh Okogie (12 on the day) had four points each to get Tech going. They would hit their watermark for the half on a three from Jose Alvarado (12 for him). Georgia Tech had a 13 point lead at 28-15 with 5:03 before halftime.

Boston College was maintaining contact with their visitors, behind the play of two players. Robinson who had 10 of his total in the first half, and John Carlos Reyes who had six points on three for three shooting on his way to a 10 point game. Reyes scored four of those points late in the first half on back to back layups to bring the lead under ten. At halftime, Georgia Tech had a 36-28 lead.

Coach Jim Christian rewarded Reyes’ fine first-half play by starting him in the second half. He responded with another layup, part of a 5-0 Eagles run that cut the lead down to 38-33 with 17:59 left. A 7-0 run tied the game for the first time, A Reyes layup was followed by a jumper from Robinson and three from Jordan Chatman (19 on 7-for-18 shooting) and it was 40-40 with 14:31 to play.

Boston College was just getting started as a 10-3 burst gave them their biggest lead of the game at 55-48 with 8:08 left. Chatman had five and Robinson hit three free throws to lead the way. Tech answered with a 6-2 run of their own to cut the lead to a one-possession game at 57-54 Eagles with 6:12 to play.

Tech then tied the game for the fourth time, then retook the lead on back to back three point shots from Tadric Jackson (10 points). It was 62-59 Yellow Jackets. A critical moment materialized for the Eagles when Robinson fouled out after making a layup to bring BC to within one at 62-61. The Eagles would have to get the job done without their best player on the floor.

And that’s just what they did, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 6-5 down the stench to force overtime for the second straight game. Unlike the extra session in their loss earlier this week to Virginia Tech, BC executed in overtime.

BC outscored Georgia Tech 11-3 in the extra five minutes. Ky Bowman, who had been silent for most of the game, came alive in overtime. He took over scoring eight of the Eagles 11 points in extra time. None was better than his reverse layup on the baseline that gave the Eagles a two-point lead at 71-69.

For Georgia Tech it was a tough one to take, losing a game that was there for them. Their record drops to 11-12 and 4-6 in league play. Next up for BC is a trip to South Bend to take on Notre Dame.
