Giampetruzzi, Palomaki Named Captains

The seniors will lead the team in 2018

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College seniors Carmen Giampetruzzi and Jake Palomaki were voted the 2018 captains by the BC baseball team, head coach Mike Gambino announced.

“I am extremely excited to have Carmen and Jake lead this team as captains,” Gambino said. “Leaders possess integrity, character and commitment and these two showcase that on a daily basis. Our junior and senior classes are filled with great people and ballplayers. We had a great fall because of the leadership on this team.”

Giampetruzzi, left-hand reliever from Manchester, N.H., has made 27 career appearances for the Eagles. Improving each season, he recorded a 1-1 record with a 3.66 ERA – the third-lowest among relievers – in 2017. He allowed just 19 hits, eight earned runs, 10 walks and struck out 21 over 19.2 innings as a junior. The southpaw was tied for third on the BC staff with 15 relief appearances and made seven appearances in ACC action. He did not allow a run in his final four outings. He recorded a career-high four strikeouts and picked up his first career win against Central Michigan on March 7.

Giampetruzzi has been one of the Eagles’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representatives for the last three years and was chosen to participate in BC Athletics’ inaugural Eagles Leadership Institute. He is a three-year member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and has earned the Athletics Director’s Award for Academic Achievement all three years at The Heights.

Palomaki, a switch-hitting infielder from Kennesaw, Ga., has played almost every game of his BC career, donning the Maroon and Gold uniform 147 times in three years. He is a .274 career hitter with 11 runs, 139 hits, including 23 doubles and 59 RBIs. He broke the BC all-time walks record in just three seasons, drawing 119. He is currently sixth all-time with a .427 on-base percentage and his 41 career stolen bases are tied for sixth. Palomaki ranks three times on BC’s single-season walks list, including holding the No. 1 spot with 46, which he registered as a freshman. In 2016, he was named to the All-Regional Team when the Eagles swept the Oxford Regional to advance to the Super Regional for the first time in program history.

A two-year member of the Chatham Anglers in the Cape Cod Baseball League, Palomaki was a recipient of the Ed Lyons Coaches Award, given annually to the players who have gone above and beyond the expectations of the coaching staff, are “grinders” who have led by example and hard work. He also was chosen to participate in the Eagles Leadership Institute.

The Eagles earned a spot in the ACC Championship Tournament the last two seasons and earned a bid to the 2016 NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009. They return for the 2018 season in February.
