New York Giants: A Giant Mess

The NFL is amazing!  The more we think we know the less we actually do.  Most expected the Patriots to dominate and cruise in the AFC East.  Nobody saw the Rams offense being one of the best in football and actually becoming a contender.  And who would have thought that coming off a playoff season, adding a stud wide receiver and bringing back a top-tier defense that New York would be in such a giant mess, and sitting at 0 – 5 to start the season?!  Surprisingly we’re talking about the Giants here, not the Jets!

I didn’t think the New York Football Giants were a playoff team this year mostly because I was so high on the Philadelphia Eagles.  But in no way did I see The G-Men starting off the 2017 season so poorly and lose their top two receivers in the same game during week 5 in a home loss to the then 0 – 4 Chargers.

Eli Manning and head coach Ben McAdoo’s offense weren’t looking good before Odell Beckham Jr. and Brandon Marshall went down for the season and with slot receiver Sterling Shepard hobbling around in a walking boot it’s highly unlikely that the “Geez-Men” will get any better.  The Giants still can’t find a running game or protect the aging Eli in the pocket.  The defense is actually playing pretty well but since the offense can’t score it doesn’t make a difference.

The Giants are one of three winless teams going into Week 6 of the NFL season.  So essentially they’re in a battle for the #1 overall draft pick come spring of 2018.  Let’s say that they get the #1 pick or somewhere in the top three.  Do they draft a quarterback?

I say 100% yes!  The Giants are no longer a perennial playoff team and haven’t been for quite some time.  Last year was the first time the Giants made the postseason since they won the Super Bowl in 2011.  Yup, that’s right!  No NFC East titles since then as the Giants continue to underachieve and let down their fans who always have high expectations.

However, the main reason why Big Blue should draft a quarterback is because of the lack of production from Eli Manning and the fact that he’ll be 37 years old at the end of this season.  It’s not like the Giants have been grooming Eli’s back up since nobody even knows who the backup quarterback is!  It’s Geno Smith and/or Davis Webb by the way!

This organization has come to a point where they need to reload and restock this roster at a variety of positions.  Usually, the place to start is at quarterback and the college ranks seem to have a few high prospects entering the 2018 NFL draft.  Guys like Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, Sam Darnold and Lamar Jackson could all be first-round selections.  The 49ers are currently 0 – 5 as well and will probably be looking to draft a QB themselves.  Who knows what the Browns will do as the other winless team this season. They did draft DeShone Kizer in last years draft so perhaps they stick with him depending on his progression through the season.  But the latest news is that Kevin Hogan is going to be the starter in Cleveland.

As we know other teams will be interested in moving up in the draft to get a quarterback like the Jets or even the Saints who need to find Drew Bress replacement sometime soon.  So if I’m sitting in the Green Room with the Giants organization I’m thinking quarterback all the way.  Even if you sit him behind Eli for a season while the Giants regroup, I believe New York has no choice but to take one of the top quarterbacks coming out of college at the end of the season.
