A Look At ACC Football This Week

Hope everyone had a happy and fun Columbus Holiday weekend. In the ACC some enjoyed the day, while others did not. Let’s take a look.

Heading into last Saturday’s game, the Miami Hurricanes held a one-game advantage over the Florida State Seminoles in their head to head matchups at 31-30. Florida State has won all seven meetings between the two teams since Jimbo Fisher became FSU head coach. Both teams have done very well as the visiting team in this rivalry. The Seminoles have won 20 of the 37 games played in Miami. While the Hurricanes have now won 15 of the 25 games in Tallahassee.

Speaking of Miami, their Junior running back Mark Walton is averaging 9.16 yards per carry this season. He leads the conference in rushing yards per game at 124.3 a contest.

The Hurricanes passing game received a big boost with the return of Sophomore Ahmmon Richards who missed the Canes first two games due to injury. In his return vs Duke, he averaged 35.3 yards a catch, with three catches for 106 yards, including a 46-yard catch and run for a Miami touchdown.

Virginia Tech wide receiver Cam Phillips is second among all active WR’s with 207 catches. That total has him in 15th place on the ACC career list as he passed DeAndre Hopkins this past Saturday night in VT win over Boston College. Phillips needs four more receptions to become the Hokies all-time leader in pass catching. He would surpass Isaiah Ford who has 210.

Earlier this season Phillips set a single-game ACC record for receptions in a contest with 14 VS ECU back on September 16.

Hokies placekicker Joey Slye put his name in Virginia Tech record books at BC this past weekend. With his 11 points scored in the win over the Eagles, (three fields goals and two extra points) he now has 374 career points. Which put him number one on VT list of all-time scorers. He passed Shane Graham who finished his Hokies career with 371.

Pittsburgh QB Max Browne had quite a day in a win over Rice in non-conference play. He was 28 of 32 for 410 yards. The yardage was the most by a Panther signal caller since Tom Savage went for 426 back in 2013 VS Duke.

Pittsburgh Punter Ryan Winslow has been kept busy by an offense that has had trouble staying on the field in games. He leads the ACC in punting with a 46.8 yards per-boot average which also ranks him fourth in the country.

The ACC continued to be a rating winner for ESPN/ABC. Their Saturday night game featuring Clemson and Virginia Tech drew an overnight rating of 3.0, that was the best among all networks in Week 5.

Wake Forest PK Mike Weaver is one of just two placekickers with at least 10 field goal attempts this season without a miss. Weaver is perfect on all ten of his tries. The only other kicker to be able to make that claim is Utah’s Matt Gay who is 14 for 14.
