The prior week in MLB was about a high school player making history in the draft, a starting pitcher in the American League heading to the disabled list and first baseman suffers an injury.

Twins Sign Draft Pick Lewis To Record Deal

The Minnesota Twins selected high school shortstop Royce Lewis with the first pick in the MLB Draft last week.

The club wasted little time inking Lewis to a contract. He will receive $6.725 million, and it’s a record for a high school player, per Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

The future success of the Twins will hinge on Lewis developing into a player who can make a difference on the diamond.

The young infielder is the fifth player they’ve selected in the top 10 since 2012 and is the first No. 1 overall selection since Joe Mauer in 2001.

Lewis was one of the more athletic players available in the draft, and it’s a great move by the Twins to add a player with his set of skills.

Yankees Place Sabathia on DL with Hamstring Injury

The New York Yankees will be without one member of their starting rotation for quite some time.

They placed CC Sabathia on the 10-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.

It’s a significant loss for the Yankees as Sabathia has impressed on the mound in 2017.

The veteran southpaw has compiled a 3.46 ERA in 13 starts (75 1/3 innings) with 62 strikeouts, 24 walks issued and a 130 ERA+.

The Yankees were unsure what type of production they would receive from Sabathia this season but must be thrilled with how he’s performed.

The nature of the injury means the Yankees will exercise caution in bringing him back as Sabathia’s hamstring injury needs to be fully healed before being activated from DL.

Orioles Place Davis on DL with Oblique Injury

The Baltimore Orioles will be missing a huge bat in their lineup for at least a couple of weeks.

The club has placed first baseman Chris Davis on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to June 13 with a right oblique strain.

Davis isn’t hitting for a high batting average as it’s at .226 in 217 at-bats. However, the power is still there with 14 home runs and 26 RBI.

The Orioles do have other options while Davis is sidelined.

Trey Mancini has posted a .306 average and .899 OPS in 53 games with 11 homers and 37 RBI. Mark Trumbo is also capable of playing some games over at first.
