Like father, like son — Christian McCaffrey is looking to follow in his father’s footsteps as an outstanding NFL player. Young Caff has some big shoes to fill as his father –ED McCaffrey– played 13-years in the NFL as a wide receiver for the 49ers, Giants, and Broncos. He is a former three-time Super Bowl champion and an All-Pro.
The combine has yet to start but coaches are already showing great interest in McCaffrey. Vance Joseph, the Broncos head coach, had this to say about the Stanford alum: “If you watch the tape, he’s a pro’s pro. I’m excited to watch him this weekend and interview him.” If he demonstrates the athleticism he flashed on tape at Stanford, mid-to-late first round is a very realistic possibility for McCaffrey
Christian McCaffrey
Class: Junior Position: Athlete
Overview
NFL teams have been evaluating Christian McCaffrey more so as an athlete than a running back due to the versatility and athleticism he demonstrated on film. He took on the role as a return specialist, running back, and wide receiver at Stanford. The triple-threat athlete played all three roles exceptionally well. He finished his career as a Cardinal with a handful of awards: AP Player of the Year, consensus All-American, Paul Hornung Award, and many other awards.
Analysis
McCaffrey is an ultra-versatile athlete. He is a solid ball carrier, pass catcher and return specialist. He exhibits the patience to run behind his blockers and allow a running lane to open up. As a receiver he creates separation from defenders with his route running and catches the ball with his hands rather than his body. He possesses extreme shiftiness and excellent vision which makes him a nightmare for defenders in the open space. He flashes the jets to take it all the way to the house. Potentially a day one draft pick, he will make a living as a playmaker at the next level.
Stats
After assuming the starting role in his sophomore year, McCaffrey was Stanford’s leading rusher, receiver and return specialist (only FBS player to do so). He set the NCAA single-season record for all-purpose yards with 3,864, dethroning NFL Hall of Fame running back and former Stanford Cardinal great, Barry Sanders’ record (3,250 all-purpose yards). He also set school records with his 2,109 rushing yards and 1,070 kickoff return yards. McCaffrey finished his amateur career with 6,987 all-purpose yards and as the only Cardinal in school history to put up over 2,000 all-purpose yards in consecutive seasons.
