FA Cup Fourth Round Review

The fourth round of the English FA Cup was contested over this past weekend, as the field of 32 clubs looked to progress to the fifth round (round of 16). Here are some of the takeaways from the action.

Liverpool Outed By Wolves

It hasn’t been a successful season for Liverpool in domestic cups. The club was knocked out of the League Cup mid-week and then suffered the loss to Wolves on Saturday. They have yet to win a match this month, and Tuesday’s marquee match against Chelsea will be their last chance to find the win column in January.

Premier League Giants Cruise

Aside from Liverpool’s defeat, five of the top six clubs in the Premier League advanced to the next round. It was easier for some as Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United all recorded comfortable victories. Tottenham, on the other hand, needed a late goal from Son Heung-min to punch their ticket to the fifth round. Regardless, it will be interesting to see if any of these five clubs draw each other on Monday.

Lincoln City Continues Run

Lincoln City hail from the fifth division of English football, and have done well to make it this far. They came into Saturday’s match against Brighton heavy underdogs once more. To put into perspective, Lincoln City is 72 places lower than their opponents in the English football pyramid. However, they didn’t let this intimidate them as they went on to win 3-1.

Non-League Sutton United Defeat Leeds United

Another non-league club has made a dent in the FA Cup this year, Sutton United have made it all the way to the fifth round with their 1-0 win over Leeds United on Sunday. The two clubs are separated by 84 spots in the pyramid, but as was shown, sometimes divisions are just a number.
