NFL Prospect Spotlight: Deshawn Ross, DT, Kentucky State

Kentucky State defensive tackle, DeShawn Ross says his passion for the sport of football dates back to his childhood.

“I’ve been playing football since I was seven, [as soon] as I could sign up,” Ross said.

Ross was so eager to play football that he joined a flag football league until he was old enough to play competitive tackle football.

During that time he watched older kids play on the tackle fields and grew anxious for his chance to put on the pads. When Ross finally got his opportunity, he said he knew he’d be playing football for a long time.

“The day I was able to play tackle football, I knew it felt right,” Ross said. “I had great coaching at a young age.”

After spending time playing for junior colleges and now wrapping up his career at Kentucky State University, Ross is taking aim at playing professional football. His size and skill set may make him an intriguing NFL prospect.

Standing at 6’1 and weighing about 290 pounds, Ross’s his tape shows that he has a very quick first step and can play with solid leverage. He also possesses great short area quickness which has allow him to disrupt opposing backfields.  Ross collected five sacks and seven tackles for loss in eight games at Kentucky State last year.

His skill set makes him a great addition for teams running 4-3 schemes as a three technique and possibly a nose tackle. Ross pounded out 33 reps of 225 pounds during a workout a few months ago, which suggests that he also has the potential to showcase adequate power when facing blockers.

As he enters the draft process, Ross understands that some scouts may consider him a risky prospect because he is considered short for a defensive tackle. He believes that his quickness and leverage can compensate for what he lacks in height. Ross also said that the career of Hall of Fame defensive tackle John Randle is what motivates him to prove critics wrong.

“He’s my all-time favorite,” Ross said. “He [wasn’t] the tallest, he wasn’t the biggest, but his heart overcame everything the notes said he lacked.”

Bengals defensive tackle, Geno Atkins is one of Ross’s favorite modern players at the position.

Ross has been in contact with a few professional teams and said he will play in the “Dream Bowl” In January 2015.
