Against All Odds: NCAA/NFL Picks Week 12

Every week, Mr. Pittsburgh SportsNation, Mike Drakulich, takes on his father, Michael J. Drakulich (MJD), in picking 10 games against the Vegas spread. Pitt, Penn State, and West Virginia, when they are playing, will always be on the slate among the five NCAA games chosen, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, covered by Mike Drakulich for NGSCsports.com, will be included alongside 4 other exciting NFL match-ups.

Another week, another ho-hum performance, as I went 5-5, matching my dad’s predictions. Least I didn’t have to tear my hair out watching Penn State shaft me again. They would have, as I would have taken Temple and the points against the Nittany Lions. I like feeling stress free, so I’ll wait until the last week to bring back PSU to see if I can finally pick a correct game with them. Pitt did exactly what I said they would do last week…just enough to break people’s hearts again. The Steelers were kind enough to play down to their opponents once again, and they kept me from a winning week. As promised, I failed to go 7-3, so next week I will feature myself in a dreaded Cleveland Browns jersey. If my column doesn’t appear next week, it’s  because I died from embarrassment from wearing those sorry colors.

NCAA

Thursday Night

(7-2) 12 Kansas State (+2.5)  OVER  West Virginia (6-4), 7:00 PM / MJD picks WVU

Kansas State heads into a tough venue where they face an up and down West Virginia squad. It’s going to be a cold night in Morgantown, and unfortunately, after this  game, there won’t be any couches burning to keep the faithful warm. Clint Trickett will have to have to have a great game for WVU to prevail.

Saturday

(8-2) 23 Nebraska (-10)  OVER  25 Minnesota (7-3), 12:00 PM / MJD picks Minnesota

Nebraska was victimized by Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon last week, who set a major college single game rushing record with 408 yards against the Huskers. Nebraska will be out to eradicate the bitter taste of that game by taking down an overrated Minnesota team. They will.

(4-6) Pitt (-7.5)  OVER  Syracuse (3-7), 3:30 PM / MJD picks Syracuse

Pitt has no trouble putting up insane offensive numbers and points. Problem is, their defense is exceptional at handing it right back to the opposing team. This week, however, Pitt, lead by stars RB James Conner and WR Tyler Boyd, will be too much for the Orange too keep pace with. Syracuse does not have the offense that Georgia Tech, Duke, or North Carolina has. Pitt will lay the wood to their rivals in this one and keep their faint bowl aspirations alive…till they’re blown away by Miami next week.

(8-2) 16 Wisconsin (-10)  OVER  Iowa (7-3), 3:30 PM / MJD picks Wisconsin

As mentioned, Melvin Gordon went off against Nebraska last week, and this week could bring about another week for the nation’s leading rusher. Iowa is simply not that good. The Badgers will roll in this one.

(7-3) 19 USC (+3.5)  OVER  9 UCLA (8-2), 8:00 PM / MJD picks UCLA

The Battle of Los Angeles will be raging on Saturday night. Though UCLA has been strong all year, USC will be bolstered by the return of knucklehead CB Josh Shaw, who was suspended for making up a story about spraining his ankles before the season began. The Trojan’s Cody Kessler will outperform the Bruin’s Brett Hundley, and USC will prove to be the bigger dog in the cross-town rivalry.

NFL

Thursday Night

(7-3) Kansas City (-7.5)  OVER  Oakland (0-10), 8:25 PM / MJD picks Kansas City

Kansas City isn’t an overwhelming team by any standards. They just find ways to win, and this week will be no different. Their luck is due to run out eventually. Oakland is running full steam towards an 0-16 season. They are the opposite of the Chiefs, as they find ways to lose. The misery continues tonight in Oakland.

Sunday

(6-4) Indianapolis (-12.5)  OVER  Jacksonville (1-9), 1:00 PM / MJD picks Indianapolis

Andrew Luck has to be salivating anticipating this match-up against the dreadful Jaguars. The only bright spot for Jacksonville has been the emergence of running back Denard Robinson, who should have plenty of yards in this game. It won’t be enough to keep the Jags from certain defeat in this one. Colts in a rout.

(7-3) Green Bay (-10)  OVER  Minnesota (4-6), 1:00 PM / MJD picks Green Bay

Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers have been blowing away their opponents with regularity the past two weeks, outscoring Chicago and Philadelphia 108-34. The Vikings couldn’t stop a bad Chicago team last week. This game could get ugly.

(7-3) Philadelphia (-11)  OVER  Tennessee (2-8), 1:00 PM /MJD picks Philadelphia

The Eagles were annihilated by Green Bay last week to the tune of 55-20. They will be looking to take out their frustrations out on a weak Titans team. Expect big numbers from Mark Sanchez, Jordan Matthews, Jeremy Maclin, and Shady McCoy in this one. Tennessee needs to let RB Bishop Sankey tote the rock more. The Eagles will fly in this one.

(7-3) Dallas (-3)  OVER  NY Giants (3-7), 4:25 PM/ MJD picks Dallas

Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, and DeMarco Murray will be too much for a weak Giants team to overtake. New York has nice talent in receivers Rueben Randle and Odell Beckham, but they can never seem to find a way to put it all together. Dallas is bound to trip up eventually, but it won’t be here.
