NCAAB: Midnight Madness underway

If you turn your TV’s to the ESPN2 channel, you will see nothing but college basketball. This event is a yearly one, that signifies the real beginning to the college basketball season. They call this day, Midnight Madness.

In the madness ALL teams from top to bottom, from Division I to Division III and beyond, hit the hardwood trying to make their case for their individual conferences.

In this day of Madness, that begins late the night before, there are potential upsets in the world of college basketball. Each year, one major team seems to fall because either they are just not ready or their opponent is better than experts ranked them to be.

This occurred last night as number eight ranked Florida Gators suffered their madness loss to un-ranked ACC opponent, the Miami Hurricanes. The Hurricanes came back from a double-digit deficit in the second half to get the win 69-67 against the Florida Gators, a Gators team that some experts have going to the Final Four this season.

While the last 24 hours is the madness, later tonight is set to be one of the biggest in this early college basketball season. Three ranked teams are set to face each other, the 25th ranked Utah Utes head to San Diego to face the 16th ranked Aztecs. In the State Farm Classic in Indianapolis, you have a double-header where prohibited favorites to make the Final Four, The evening finale, the Wildcats of Kentucky face off against the Kansas Jayhawks and in the opening match up, the Tom Izzo led Michigan State Spartans, ranked 19th in the nation (an undervalued ranking I may add) go against his old nemesis, coaching legend Coach Mike Krzyzewski and his 4th ranked Duke Blue Devils.

Without question today is madness, but if the next few days tell anything more, it is this. The beginning to separate the contenders from the pretenders. Overrated teams get exposed to undervalued teams. Breakout stars, “diaper dandies are found” and potential NBA stars are born.

The madness of college basketball is more than just a day, it is an entire season, a RACE to March Madness.
