Mike Tomlin Press Conference

Since being clobbered by the Cleveland Browns 31-10, the Pittsburgh Steelers have turned their season around with three straight impressive victories in a row. Now sporting a 6-3 record, the team looks to continue it’s winning ways against the 1-8 New York Jets on Sunday at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. Game time is 1:00 pm.

For the second game in a row, Ben Roethlisberger tossed six touchdown passes, as the Steelers blew away the Baltimore Ravens 43-23 last Sunday night. The defense, as they did to the Colt’s Andrew Luck, also continued it’s physical play against Joe Flacco and the Ravens, and will hope to do the same against Michael Vick, who has become the starter for the Jets, replacing Geno Smith, who has been awful all season long.

The Steelers, under Mike Tomlin, have had some historically less-than-spectacular performances against lesser teams. Pittsburgh will be looking to avoid any letdowns against a downtrodden Jets team. If the Steelers need any reminders, all they have to do is look at the games earlier this season played against Tampa Bay and Jacksonville.

“That’s quite frankly one of the things we have to guard against,” said Tomlin. “Winning a big, emotional game like that and having the ability to move forward individually and collectively to the next challenge will define us. It always does. It’s universal in football. There are many examples you can cite of teams having to move on.”

“We started off 2-6 a year ago, and what we were able to do over the second half is a reflection of that. You better respect teams when you step into stadiums. We respect the Jets. I respect those guys and what they’re capable of. I respect anybody we play week in and week out. There are no homecoming games, there are no I-AA opponents in the NFL.”.

Tomlin was none too pleased about allowing a 108-yard kickoff return to Jacoby Jones and the Ravens. He was particularly upset at the lack of focus and the dancing by the players before the kick. “You won’t see our kickoff team dancing anymore,” Tomlin said. “Bottom line, we looked unprepared. That’s unacceptable.”

On the injury front, the team will be without star SS Troy Polamalu (Sprained Knee), LB Ryan Shazier (Sprained Ankle), and SS Shamarko Thomas (Hamstring). Each player is week-to-week. Polamalu was injured when Justin Forsett rolled up his legs during a tackle before the end of the 1st half.

Other than FS Mike Mitchell and SS Will Allen, who replaced Polamalu when he was injured and played well, Robert Golden is the only fully healthy safety remaining on the team. Ross Ventrone, who sat out this week while injured, will hope to get back to action this week in practice.

CB Ike Taylor will also be looking to receive some good news on his forearm that was broken in week three against the Carolina Panthers. He has a good possibility to return to full practice this week.
