UCONN CB Byron Jones Has the Tools

Byron Jones played high school football at St. Paul in Bristol Connecticut where he was an All-State performer. He was also named First Team All-Naugatuck Valley. Though he finished his high school career as one of the better players in the state, Jones was not widely recruited. Jones subsequently committed to the University of Connecticut. As a freshman he redshirted but showed promise as a scout-team player.

In 2011 Jones Started five games at safety and earned a varsity letter. In 2012 he started all 12 games at safety and was third on his team in tackles with 88. While the ball wasn’t thrown his way very often, he still managed to record an interception on the season. In 2013 Jones converted from safety to corner where he continued to prove himself as an effective tackler finishing the season with 60 tackles. He also led the team in interceptions with three.

While the Huskies are just 1-5 on the year, Byron wholeheartedly believes that he and his teammates will turn their season around.

Jones’ versatility and range is impossible to ignore. While he’s a larger corner, he has very good footwork, which enables him to close on underneath routes quickly. He also has enough athleticism to turn and run with many team’s best wide receivers on a weekly basis. Jones should be highly coveted as he presents the skill set and size that many teams are looking for.

At 6-foot-1, he has a large frame, he’s an exceptional athlete, and he also has a nose for the football, which is substantiated by the number of tackles he’s accumulated over the years. Jones might not be receiving acclaim commensurate with many of the purported top tier cornerbacks in the country, but watching him play, it’s clear that he is certainly deserving of it. As it stands, Jones is a third-round prospect with potential to rise following postseason all-star games and workouts.
