AFC South Week 5 Preview

The regular NFL season is back and we are here to provide you with your weekly AFC South Week 5 preview. So let’s take a look around the division at the Week 4 match-ups. We also give you our score predictions and the latest on injuries and betting lines.

Houston Texans (3-1) at Dallas Cowboys (3-1)

AT & T Stadium, Arlington, Texas

Kickoff Sunday at Noon on CBS

The premier game of the division is once against a Texans matchup. The Governor’s Cup isn’t much of a rivalry anymore but it is still a thing. The series is now tied at 5-5 as the Cowboys lead the regular season series 2-1 and the Texans the pre-season series 4-3. By the numbers, this year’s teams are virtually identical.

Rod Marinella deserves a ton of credit for improving the Cowboys defense while Bill O’Brien has removed the cloud hanging over the Texans and convinced them they can win. Unfortunately, the Texans have a lot of key players who are banged up right now. The Cowboys look to be without linebacker Bruce Carter on an already injury strapped defense.

The current line is Cowboys -6 and per Linemakers both teams are 3-1 ATS thus far. I would be very tempted to take the Texans assuming most of their walking wounded play. JJ Watt will be probable Sunday as will Arian Foster and it is expected they will play. Andre Johnson is questionable and will be a game time decision.

Final score prediction:

Texans 17

Cowboys 24

Baltimore Ravens (3-1) At Indianapolis Colts (2-2)

Lucas Oil Stadium Indianapolis, Indiana

Kickoff Sunday at Noon on CBS

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh deserves a ton of credit for keeping his team focused and playing well in light of the Ray Rice drama. The Ravens are only one game out of the top of the AFC North and looking like a strong contender for the playoffs once again. If the season ended today, the Ravens would face the Buffalo Bills in the AFC wildcard playoff game.

The Ravens have a slew of injuries while the Colts will be without suspended LaRon Landry who is serving a four game suspension for violation of the NFL PEDs policy.

The current Vegas line is Colts -3.5. They are 3-1 ATS this season while the Ravens are 1-8 against the spread in this series. Canty isn’t expected to play and Terrell Suggs is questionable. Colts running back Ahmad Bradshaw is probable and should play while Arthur Jones and Jack Mewhort are out this week.

Final score prediction:

Ravens 24

Colts 21

Pittsburgh Steelers (2-2) at Jacksonville Jaguars (0-4)

Everbank Field, Jacksonville, Florida

Kickoff Sunday at Noon on CBS

The hapless Jaguars have entered the Blake Bortles era and while it hasn’t shown improvement in their W/L record yet it has already improved their overall team.  The Jaguars are still making over their roster and while improved are still too thin at overall talent.

The Jaguars will be without Cecil Shorts and Marqise Lee who have been huge disappointments this season. Tight end Mickey Shuler is out and Marcedes Lewis is on injured reserve with a designation to return. The Jaguars are short on talent already and injuries limit them further.

The Steelers aren’t as good as expected and their own gradual rebuild is still underway. Rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier is out and they are a bit dinged up but they are the overwhelmingly better team here. Can the Jaguars catch them off guard in a trap game?

The Jaguars are 0-4 against the spread this year but the Steelers lost last week to a winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that was embarrassed by the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night football. The current line is Steelers -7 and they are 1-3 ATS this year.

Final score prediction:

Steelers 27

Jaguars  17

Cleveland Browns (1-2) at Tennessee Titans (1-3)

LP Field Nashville, Tennessee

Kickoff Sunday at Noon on CBS

This game rounds out the bottom of the division because the Titans have played so poorly they don’t even generate excitement among their fans and the Browns while a pretty good football team under Brian Hoyer only manage to draw excitement with news about their backup quarterback or their suspended wide receiver.

You can find our full preview here but this game is between two teams that are remarkably similar. The Browns are coming off a bye and will get Jordan Cameron back which will help their offense. Ben Tate will be back as well but expect Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell to continue to see looks and carries.

Jake Locker is back as well and should do some damage against a defense that is really struggling. They are 1-3 against the spread this year and on a three game losing streak in real life as well.
