West, Crowell key to Browns offense

As the Cleveland Browns use their bye week to prepare for a week five game against the Tennessee Titans, they should be careful not to deviate from the backfield combination that can transform their season.

Due to the injury of starter Ben Tate, the Browns have leaned on rookies Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell and now have a rushing attack that currently ranks tenth in the NFL.

The Browns signed Tate to a two-year deal back in March in an attempt to bring a stable rusher to their franchise. However, by combining for 345 rushing yards in about three games, the duo of  West and Crowell have been a model of stability thus far.

West was selected in the third round and due to his versatility, he has received the majority of the workload since Tate’s injury.  West is a physical, downhill rusher who displays deceptive agility and a knack for catching the ball out of the backfield, and has averaged just over four yards per carry with two touchdowns so far this season.

Crowell is an undrafted free agent who signed with the Browns back in Ma and his play has demanded more carries with each game. His arsenal features exceptional vision and great quickness to bounce outside or use jump cuts to change his direction.  He’s averaged just over five yards per carry and has rushed for three touchdowns in three games.

Because of their success, it is fair to say that Tate should see a slight reduction in his workload once he returns. The Browns should be excited at the prospect of alternating his carries with West and occasionally Crowell.

This dynamic rushing attack will also help starting quarterback Brian Hoyer, who has yet to throw an interception and has posted a Total Quarterback Rating (QBR) of  89.5 in last week’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. In order to stay successful, Hoyer will need some help from his back field when they play their next game against the Tennesee Titans who are currently ranked as the second best team in the NFL against the pass.
