AFC South Week 1 Preview

The regular NFL season is here and we are here to provide you with your AFC South Week 1 preview. So let’s take a look around the division at the opening games on NFL Kickoff Weekend.

Indianapolis Colts at Denver Broncos

Sunday Night Football kickoff at 7:30 pm CST

Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado

Broadcast on NBC

Easily the premier game of the division, Peyton Manning faces his old team in the first game of the regular season. The two teams have played once since Manning joined the Broncos. It was a 39-33 loss in Indianapolis during the 2013 season. It was the Broncos first loss of the season as Andrew Luck threw for three touchdown passes while running for another.

Vegas has the Broncos as a 7.5 point favorite at the moment and this game is trending to be the most heavily wagered game of the week. Manning was sacked four times in the prior matchup but the Colts will be without linebacker Robert Mathis who is serving a four game suspension to start the season. The Broncos will be without slot wide receiver Wes Welker who is also serving a four game suspension.

Final score prediction:

Colts 24

Broncos 35

Tennessee Titans at Kansas City Chiefs

Kickoff is Sunday at noon CST

Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri

Broadcast on CBS

This is the 50th meeting between the two teams going back to their days as the Houston Oilers and the Dallas Texans. The Chiefs own a 29-20 lead in the series and are 2-0 versus the Oilers/Titans in AFC playoff action. The last time the Chiefs won in the playoffs it was 1994 at the Astrodome against the Oilers 28-20. The two teams faced each other during the 2013 season at LP Field on October 6, 2013 where the Chiefs won 26-17.

The Chiefs are banged up while the Titans are healthy. Expect the Titans to attack a weak Chiefs secondary while the Chiefs will test the Titans run defense with a full dose of Jamaal Charles. It will be new Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt’s debut and expect him to air it out. Whisenhunt is 2-1 versus Andy Reid in the regular season and 1-0 versus him in the post season.

Final score prediction:

Titans 24

Chiefs 21

Jacksonville Jaguars at Philadelphia Eagles

Kickoff is Sunday at noon EST

Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Broadcast on CBS

These two teams have faced each other four times in their history. The Jaguars have won 3 of those matchups but suffered a home loss in the last meeting during the 2010 regular season. The Jaguars are undergoing a rebuild under second year head coach Gus Bradley. The Jaguars posted a 4-12 record in his first season.

The Philadelphia Eagles also have a second year head coach in Chip Kelly but his first season was a huge success as they went 10-6 and made it to the post-season. Kelly is currently the darling of the NFL and his team appears poised for another big year. Can the up and coming Jaguars pull off a shocker in Week 1?

The current Vegas line has the Eagles favored by 10.5. Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne has never thrown more touchdowns than interceptions in his seven year NFL career. The Philly defense is looking to improve on its 2013 performance. The Jaguars should be pretty good on defense this year. Both teams will be running up tempo offenses.

Final score prediction:

Jaguars 13

Eagles 28

Washington at Houston Texans

Kickoff Sunday at noon EST

Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas

Broadcast on Fox

The battle of the first  year head coaches starts in Week 1 as Jay Gruden’s Washington team takes on Bill O’Brien’s Texans team. It could be a long game for Robert Griffin III who has thrown 17 career interceptions and fumbled the ball nine times in his two year career. He has also taken 68 sacks including 38 last year alone. The Texans defense is very tough and JJ Watt had 10.5 sacks last season. New addition Ja’daveon Clowney will make that defense that much stronger.

Vegas currently has the Texans at -3. Washington was 3-10 against the spread last year.
