Cortland Finnegan Excels for Dolphins

Last season, cornerback Brent Grimes was arguably the Miami Dolphins best free agent acquisition as he recorded 60 tackles and four interceptions on his way to his second Pro Bowl appearance. This year, there’s another cornerback who could become the team’s best free agency signing and his name is Cortland Finnegan.

So far during the preseason and training camp practices, Finnegan has been one of the better players on the Miami Dolphins’ defense. After Monday’s practice, head coach Joe Philbin talked about how impressed he was with Finnegan.

“He continues to get the deeper knowledge base of what we’re doing and continues to get better,” said Philbin.  “So far, I like what see. “The hope is that we continue to develop Cortland fundamentally within the system and the scheme.”

Finnegan was an All-Pro cornerback for the Tennessee Titans in 2008 and was once considered one of the best at his positions. He signed a five-year, $50 million contract with the St. Louis Rams in 2012, but was released last March after two subpar seasons.

Finnegan said he arrived at camp wanting to improve and has complimented Philbin’s staff for helping him eliminate the flaws in his game.

“I have to credit my coaches for staying on me with the technique – Coach (Kevin) Coyle, Coach Lou (Anarumo), Coach Blue (Adams), Coach JB (Jeff Burris),” said Finnegan. “We always go in and look at the film and try to assess and get better from it. That’s just the big approach the way I’m trying to do it this year.”

During practices, he has lined up opposite of Grimes and ahead of 2013 draft picks Jamar Taylor and Will Davis. If Finnegan can play anywhere close to his former All-Pro form, he and Grimes could make up the Dolphins best cornerback tandem since Patrick Surtain and Sam Madison back in the late 90s and early 2000s.

With 2013 Pro Bowler Grimes on the opposite side, you can expect quarterbacks to test Finnegan a lot this season. While being a notorious trash talker in the past, a more mature Finnegan is ready to take a different approach in proving his doubters wrong.

“I’ve just got to let Sunday do the talking. As for that, I can’t say anything. I’ve just got to let Sunday do the talking.”

The Dolphins have a number of issues to figure out, but cornerback doesn’t seem to be one of them. While Grimes is certainly the best cornerback on the team, Finnegan appears ready to become an impact player once again.
