Final Titans Training Camp Update

Here is our final Tennessee Titans training camp update as they held their final practice of camp Wednesday in a closed to the public session and. It was a rather light practice with some emphasis on special teams so there isn’t a lot to discuss. I will update as I go through my notes and photographs with any additional information.

After overall looking pretty good this week, Jake Locker was a bit erratic today. Charlie Whitehurst was also intercepted by Hakeem Smith on a pass intended for Isaiah Williams. Zach Mettenberger overall had a good practice.

Justin Hunter was the star of the show today with several incredible catches including a jump ball in the endzone that he leaped over the defender to grab. If he fulfills his potential he really could be special. Nate Washington continues to make plays as does Michael Preston. Derek Hagan had a couple of nice receptions today.

The Titans ran a lot of 3 and 4 wide receiver packages today. We even saw them line at 5 wide at one point with Dexter McCluster split out but he motioned back to the backfield. Another thing I noticed today and have seen them do in camp this year is line up in bunch packages. This is definitely not Kansas anymore Dorothy. Ding dong Fisherball truly is gone.

On the other side of the ball, the Titans ran a lot of nickel and dime packages today with 3 safeties on the field. Wesley Woodyard called a lot of the defensive plays and I got a chance to talk to him after practice. He expects to wear the defensive mic and will likely be basically an every down linebacker.

I did notice Derrick Morgan dropping into coverage today. I’m not sure if it is happening more frequently or if I am just noticing it more. I suspect the latter as it makes sense to get Morgan comfortable at his new spot and then start doing more with him. Also, Kam Wimbley would have had a sack on a play where he quickly made it into the backfield untouched.

We got to see a lot of Brett Kern punting today and his hangtime was good as well as his placement. Travis Koons is getting the reps at place kicker with Maikon Bonani sidelined and while I think he is improving I’m not sure the Titans go into the season with an unproven kicker. I think it’s far more likely they make a move after training camp cuts begin.

The Titans will travel to New Orleans to face the Saints Friday to face the Saints. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. CST.
