Jimmy Garoppolo is Rising Up Draft Boards

Chances are you probably have never heard of Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, but that’s about to change. He was awarded The East-West Shrine Game Most Outstanding Offensive Player on Saturday after he finished 9 for 14 for 100 yards and a touchdown pass to Coastal Carolina wide receiver Matt Hazel.

Garoppolo came off the bench in the second quarter and led the East all-stars on a 66-yard touchdown drive in the last minute before halftime. Garoppolo showed why many reporters and scouts at the game thought he was the number one NFL prospect at the East-West Shrine Game

Garoppolo may not be the tallest quarterback in the world, but he has a very quick delivery. He also has pretty good arm strength. While his arm strength isn’t great, Garoppolo was very accurate in the throws he made on Saturday.

Garoppolo’s had an amazing senior season at Eastern Illinois. The quarterback threw for 5,050 passing yards and 53 touchdowns in his senior season. Garoppolo also completed 66 percent of his passes and had a 5.9 touchdown to interception ratio.

In many of the mock NFL drafts I’ve seen, Garoppolo is projected anywhere from the second or third round. The East-West Shrine Game certainly did not hurt his case.

NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah said during the broadcast of the game that he sees Garoppolo as a possible second-round pick right now, but he would be gone by the third round at the latest. With the need for quarterbacks around the NFL, Garoppolo could be taken sooner than expected.

Garoppolo will have one more opportunity before the NFL scouting combine to impress scouts. He will play in the Senior Bowl on Saturday January 25 after Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron declined his invitation. With quarterbacks Derek Carr (Fresno State) and David Fales (San José State) also playing in the game, this is the perfect opportunity for Garoppolo to emerge himself from the other quarterbacks.
