Week 16 preview: NFC East

Week 16 of the 2013 NFL Season reminds us all that the NFL Playoff chase is now at its fever pitch. In the NFC East, the chase for the NFC East division title has now also hit a fever pitch with both the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys losing in Week 15. The Eagles are still in position to win the division with two games remaining including a pivotal Sunday Night Football game at home against the Chicago Bears, who are in a pivotal divisional fight themselves in the NFC North. The Dallas Cowboys know what is at stake this week when they travel to Washington D.C. to take on the Redskins in a must win game for the Cowboys to keep their postseason hopes alive. Two teams to keep an eye on in Week 15 in terms of the NFC Playoff picture are in the NFC East division.

Dallas Cowboys (7-7) vs Washington Redskins (3-11)

So the Cowboys find themselves in familiar territory in December with another opportunity to make the playoffs but find themselves struggling in the month of December. This game against the Redskins has major playoff implications for the Cowboys. They find themselves in a situation where they must win their final two games of the regular season against the aforementioned Redskins and against the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday to win the NFC East Division. The Redskins have the perfect opportunity to play spoiler against a team who is in contention and struggles in the month of December. Tony Romo is 12-19 in his career in the regular season and the big question for this game will be can the Cowboys put last week’s collapse against the Green Bay Packers behind them and win a critical game on the road against the Redskins

Chicago Bears (8-6) vs Philadelphia Eagles (8-6)

This is the game that millions of fans will be tuning in on Sunday Night Football and not just because it’s a primetime game. The Bears find themselves in a fight for the NFC North division title as they currently lead the Packers by one game in the division going up against the first place Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East division. The Eagles lead the Cowboys by one game and need a win in order to ensure that their Week 17 matchup against the Cowboys will be a winner takes all matchup for the division title. Eagles quarterback Nick Foles has cooled off somewhat in the last couple of weeks in terms of his ability to make the deep passes however the Eagles offense has not miss much of a beat because of the performance of running back LeSean McCoy. The Bears the past 7 weeks have allowed the most yards per game in the NFL and will have to play outstanding on the defense if they are going to win this game. Jay Cutler must play turnover free football with no interception and avoid having the Bears offense from having to play from behind.

New York Giants (5-9) vs Detroit Lions (7-7)

The Detroit Lions are one game behind the Chicago Bears in the race for the NFC North but their biggest concern may just be the play of Matthew Stafford. If the Lions are going to make the playoffs, they need Stafford to play at a much higher level than what he has played. In the past seven weeks Stafford has thrown 13 interceptions and his lack luster performance on Monday night did not help his team in the playoff hunt. The Giants have the opportunity to play spoiler if they can force Stafford into making errant thrown and create pressure on the quarterback. The Lions must win to stay alive in the NFC North race and Matthew Stafford will be a huge reason why they will or will not make the postseason
