A look at the Tennessee Titans for 2013

This is the third season for head coach Mike Munchak and his coaching staff. The goal this year is as simple as win or go home. It started this off season with the draft and free agent signings. There were additions to the coaching staff as well. A plan has been put into place and now it’s time to execute the plan.

Munchak is now comfortable in his position and is now moving around in camp. He has helped more with the offensive line this camp. He knows that he and fellow Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews need the O line big time this year. In order for this thing to work they will need a huge year from key players.

One of those players is RB Chris Johnson. He is just a few years removed from his 2,006 yard season. Histroy shows that no back has ever gotten 2,000 yards twice. Still , Johnson beleives he can be the first to do it. He has made it very clear that he needs more help from his offensive line. A 58 yard touchdown run in the preseason opener showed he still has the speed. Two carries in that game does not show us where he really is at this point of his career, but it is a good sign.

The offensive line issue was addressed when the aquired free agent guard Andy Levitre from the Bills. In this year’s draft they got Alabama guard Chance Warmack with the 10th pick. Later they got C Chris Schwenke, who is hurt right now, but will get the starting job sooner than later. Each of these additions should make life easier ofr Johnson and the Titans.

At QB is Jake Locker in his third year in Tenessee. His first year was a learning experience under Matt Hasselbeck. In his second he got the starting job but was hurt for a lot of the year. There are questions lingering about his future with the team. He has been up and down this camp. The other day he threw three interceptions, which really, should have been four. It was an off day that had the fans talking and wondering. He will need to get it all togteher this year or he may be gone along with the coaching staff.

On defense, defensive coordinator Jerry Green wanted to get bigger from the day he got here. His wish has now come tru in year three. He has guys like Ropati Pitoitua and Sammie Hillto help Derrick Morgan and the rest of the defense. They have guys like LB Moises Fokou and Bernard Pollard behind the guys on the line.

The secondary added Pollard and another vet in George Wilson. Michael Griffin finds himself in a make or break year as well. Altteraun Verner and Jason McCourty will play a bigger part now that the defensive backfiedl appears to be shored up. This was a very weak spot last year as the team had one of the worst defensive showings in team history.

So with all that said, it is the playoffs or bust for this organization. Munchak must find a way to get the right players on the field to get the job done. The return of Greg Williams will bolster the attitude of this team. Something that was sorely lacking last year. The owner is not getting any younger, or more patient. He wants a Super Bowl before he leaves this world. I am not sure he will get that wish, but if this organization does not want a blow up at the end of this year, they better make a playoff run.
